piperacillin is an injectable antibacterial combination product consisting of the semisynthetic antibiotic piperacillin sodium and the β-lactamase inhibitor tazobactam sodium for intravenous administration.

Piperacillin sodium is derived from D(-)-α -aminobenzyl-penicillin. The chemical name of piperacillin sodium is sodium (2S,5R,6R)-6-[(R)-2-(4-ethyl-2,3-dioxo-1-piperazine-carboxamido)-2-phenylacetamido]-3,3-dimethyl-7-oxo-4-thia-1-azabicyclo[3.2.0]heptane-2-carboxylate. DRUG INTERACTIONS
Tell your doctor of any over-the-counter or prescription medication you may take including: antibiotics, birth control pills, "blood thinners", blood pressure medication, methotrexate. This drug may interfere with the effectiveness of birth control pills. Discuss using other methods of birth control with your doctor. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.

USES
This medication is used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections. This medication is a combination of 2 drugs. Piperacillin is a penicillin-type antibiotic that works by stopping the growth of bacteria. Tazobactam is an enzyme inhibitor (beta-lactamase inhibitor) that helps the piperacillin work better.

This antibiotic treats only bacterial infections. It will not work for viral infections (e.g., common cold, flu). Unnecessary use or misuse of any antibiotic can lead to its decreased effectiveness.

HOW TO USE
This medication is administered by slowly infusing it into a vein over thirty minutes. This is usually given every 6 to 8 hours at evenly spaced intervals around the clock to ensure a constant level of medication in your blood. Use this medication for the full time prescribed. Do not stop using this without your doctor's approval even if you feel better after a few days. Stopping therapy too soon may result in a reinfection.

SIDE EFFECTS
Headache, dizziness, nausea, stomach upset, or loose stools may occur the first few days as your body adjusts to the medication. You may experience pain or irritation at the injection site. If any of these effects continue or become bothersome, inform your doctor. Notify your doctor if you develop: vomiting, diarrhea, fever, chest pain, anxiety, unusual bleeding or bruising. This medication may rarely cause a severe intestinal condition (pseudomembranous colitis) due to a resistant bacteria. This condition may occur weeks after treatment has stopped. Do not use anti-diarrhea products or narcotic pain medications if you have the following symptoms because these products may make them worse. Tell your doctor immediately if you develop: persistent diarrhea, abdominal or stomach pain/cramping, blood/mucus in your stool. Use of this medication for prolonged or repeated periods may result in oral thrush, or a new yeast infection (e.g., oral or vaginal fungal infection). Contact your doctor if you notice white patches in your mouth, a change in vaginal discharge or other new symptoms. A serious allergic reaction to this drug is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

OVERDOSE
If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. US residents can call the US national poison hotline at 1-800-222-1222. Canadian residents should call their local poison control center directly. Symptoms of overdose may include seizures.

PRECAUTIONS
Before taking piperacillin/tazobactam, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or to penicillin; or if you have any other allergies. Tell your doctor if you have: pre-existing kidney disease, cystic fibrosis, other illnesses. This medication contains sodium. This could affect you if you are on a salt-restricted diet or if you have a condition which could be worsened by an increase in salt intake (e.g., congestive heart failure). Consult your doctor or pharmacist for more information. This drug may make you dizzy; use caution engaging in activities requiring alertness such as driving or using machinery. Limit alcoholic beverages. This medication should be used only if clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. Since small amounts of this medication are found in breast milk, consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

MISSED DOSE
If you miss a dose, use it as soon as remembered; do not use it if it is near the time for the next dose, instead, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not "double-up" the dose to catch up.

STORAGE
Store single-dose vials at room temperature between 68 and 77 degrees F (20-25 degrees C). Do not freeze. Pharmacy bulk vials should be stored at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (15-30 degrees C). Check the expiration date on the label and properly discard of any unused medication after that time. Do not store in bathroom. Keep all medicines away from children and pets.
